WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Cyclones down Penn with ease

In 1895, the headline “Iowa cyclone devastates Evanston town” led to the school’s current nickname after an underdog ISU football team won in dominating fashion with a 36-0 win over Northwestern. On Friday afternoon, the ISU women’s basketball team revisited the site of the birth of their modern mascot, and validated that nickname with a 78-38 beat down of the Pennsylvania Quakers on the Northwestern campus in Evanston, Ill.

The Cyclones (2-1) shot 56 percent from the field, including a scalding 13-22 (59.1%) from three-point range, while holding the Quakers to just 25 percent shooting from the field. Iowa State also held advantages in rebounds (38-29) and assists (22-11) over Penn in the process.

Both teams were running neck-and-neck in the beginning stages of the first half until Iowa State dropped five consecutive three-point shots to extend their lead to 27-15 and never looked back. Three of the five makes, beyond the arc, came from junior guard Kelsey Bolte, who finished with a game-high of 15 points. Freshman center Anna Prins matched Bolte’s 15 and added nine rebounds to pace the Cyclones on the boards.

All but one Cyclone found the scoring column on black Friday, with guard Whitney Williams and Alison Lacey also accumulating double-digit points, at 14 and 11, respectively. Lacey also added nine assists to just two turnovers in the winning effort.
