VOLLEYBALL: Big 12 volleyball power rankings

Kayci Woodley —

1. No. 2 Texas 11–0

The Longhorns travel to Texas A&M this week, where they will more than likely extend their record to 12–0 in the conference. Texas comes off a sweep over the Buffaloes on Saturday.

2. No. 9 Iowa State 9–2

The Cyclones host Baylor this Wednesday, one of the two Big 12 teams Iowa State has lost to. The Cyclones enter the game after a sweep over Texas Tech on Saturday and an upset in Lincoln last Wednesday that caused the five-spot jump in the AVCA poll this week. Junior libero Ashley Mass and freshman middle blocker Jamie Straube were named Big 12 Players of the Week after their performances for the Cyclones last week.

3. No. 8 Nebraska 8–3

The Huskers had the rug pulled out from under them on their home court last Wednesday as Iowa State beat Nebraska 3–2 for the first time in the series history. The Huskers travel to Texas Tech, where they should dominate the Red Raiders and have a chance at second place in the conference again if Iowa State losses to Baylor. With the loss to the Cyclones last week, the Huskers dropped to third in the Big 12 as Iowa State stepped into sole ownership of second.

4. No. 23 Baylor 7–4

The Bears travel to Ames this week where anxious Cyclones will await to revenge their loss in Waco. As Iowa State enters after a huge victory over Nebraska and an easy sweep over the Red Raiders, the Bears will walk into Hilton Coliseum on Wednesday after a four-set victory over Kansas State on Saturday — a game much tighter than it should have been for Baylor.

5. No. 25 Texas A&M 6–4

The Aggies play host to in-state rival Texas on Wednesday after a weekend off to prepare. Having the Saturday game off was needed for A&M as they face powerhouse Texas on Wednesday night. The advantage they have is that they’ll be playing on their home court, but will have to leave it all on the floor if they planning on handing the Longhorns their first conference loss of the season.

6. Oklahoma 6–5

The Sooners welcome Colorado on Wednesday and should come out on top without a problem. Oklahoma will enter play after an expected loss to Nebraska. The Sooners, however, did manage to take a set from the then-No. 5 Cornhuskers.

7. Missouri 5–6

The Tigers host Kansas State on Wednesday and enter the game with a win over Kansas in their pocket. Missouri’s Paola Ampudia was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after recording 51 total kills last week, including a school-record 35 against Kansas on Saturday.

8. Kansas 4–7

The Jayhawks take a break this week, and it will be needed as Kansas fell to Missouri last week and will host A&M on Saturday. In order to compete with the Aggies this weekend, Kansas will need to maintain a consistent attacking game, something the Jayhawks struggled with against Missouri.

9. Kansas State 2–8

The Wildcats travel to Missouri in hopes of their third conference win. This will be a tough battle for Kansas State, though, as Ampudia is on a roll for the Tigers right now and couldn’t be stopped by the Jayhawks last week. The Wildcats will have the loss to Baylor in their minds entering the matchup with Mizzou, having had only two players post kills in the double-digits. Baylor held Kansas State to a dismal .137 hitting percentage in the matchup, something the Wildcats can’t repeat against the Tigers.

10. Colorado 1–10

Oklahoma will visit Boulder on Wednesday and will more than likely leave with a win. Unless Colorado can fix its .156 attacking average or the 17 errors per game, the Buffs are looking at their 11th loss of the season in the Big 12.

11. Texas Tech 0–10

It’s been the same old story for the Red Raiders this season in Big 12 play, and it doesn’t look as if that trend will end anytime soon as Tech faces off with Nebraska on Wednesday.
