Iowa State’s Craig Brackins and Marquis Gilstrap were honored by the Big 12 on Thursday.

Brackins, a first-team all Big 12 performer last season, was named to the 2009 Preseason All-Big 12 team, while Gilstrap, a junior college transfer from Gulf Coast Community College, was named Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.

The 6-foot-10 Brackins enters his junior season after averaging 20.2 points and 9.5 rebounds in 2008-09. The Palmdale, Calif. native decided to forego the NBA draft after last season, and returns as the third player in Iowa State’s history with more than 600 points and 300 rebounds in a season, after getting 645 and 303 last season, respectively. Brackins is 26th all-time at Iowa State with 1,011 career points.

Brackins and Sherron Collins of Kansas were the only unanimous selections to the team. Cole Aldritch of Kansas, Willie Warren of Oklahoma, Damion James of Texas, and James Anderson of Oklahoma State rounded out the selections.

Gilstrap has been considered one of the best junior college transfers for 2009-10, including being ranked the 26th-best player in the class of 2009 by ESPN, whose rankings include both high school and junior college players. The 6-foot-7 forward from Covington, Ga. averaged 22.6 points and 10.1 rebounds last year and led his team to a 24-9 record.

Aldrich and Collins were also named Preseason Co-Players of the Year.

Texas’ Avery Bradley was named Preseason Freshman of the Year.
