SOCCER: Cyclones fall to Oklahoma, 1-0

David Merrill —

Iowa State dominated the Sooners 20-5 in the shots department, including eight shots on goal. They couldn’t pull ahead on the scoreboard, though, as Oklahoma freshman Dria Hampton’s goal at the 25:13 mark in the second half was enough to secure a 1-0 victory at the ISU Soccer Complex.

The Sooners’ freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire thwarted many of the Cyclones’ attempts around the penalty box throughout the game. Neither team was able to push across a goal in the first half, but the Cyclones held a 7-2 shot advantage.

“She was phenomenal,” coach Wendy Dillinger said. “She was solid; she played every ball spot-on perfect.”

Three of the Cyclones’ seven shots were on goal. Senior goalkeeper Ann Gleason recorded one save.

When the game hit the 23:00 mark in the second half the Cyclones put another dose of heavy pressure, including two corner kicks, on the Sooners but they were able to turn Iowa State away.

The Cyclones best opportunity at a goal came with 15:55 remaining in the second half, senior midfielder Elise Reid lobbed one for freshman midfielder Jordan Wagner, who got the ball inside five yards but Devonshire made a diving save.

“I think she (the goalkeeper) did a good job, but I think we made her look good,” Wagner said. “Its not hard to stop a ball if it’s coming right at you. I should have kicked it harder, but not much you can do about it now.”

Almost half of the Cyclones shots were on target, but the finishing troubles came back to haunt them once again.

Not having enough people in the box and putting more people forward are things the Cyclones feel they need to address.

“I think that we should have had more people in the box,” Reid said. “We had a lot more end line drives and passes than in the other game, but we just couldn’t find a way to get the ball in the net…We really need to get back to putting more people forward. We’re so good at set pieces because everyone crashes the box. We need to start doing the same thing in the running play.”

Despite the loss, Dillinger and her players felt like that they controlled the pace of the game throughout the 90 minutes.

“I thought we played really well overall; played hard, battled,” Dillinger said. “On the goal we had one mental letdown. You can’t do that in this conference and come out with a win. We had great chances, good crosses, and good service…You got to finish; you have to find a way to put it away.”

The loss moves the Cyclones to 1-3 in conference play and 6-4-4 overall. They are set to play Baylor on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the ISU Soccer complex.
