Des Moines Register reports 3 H1N1 cases identified on campus
August 29, 2009
Three cases of the H1N1 virus have been confirmed on campus, according to an article in the Des Moines Register.
ISU officials told the Register the three cases did not require hospitalization.
Michelle Hendricks, director of the Thielen Student Health Center, said in a previous interview with the Daily that a healthy diet, exercise, plenty of rest and frequent hand washing can prevent students from contracting H1N1.
“Right next to your healthy immune system, your clean hands are absolutely your best friend,” she said.
Hendricks could not be reached for comment on the three cases Saturday.

The Center for Disease Control recommends:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Stay home if you get sick. The CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
