WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT: Scouting Texas

Travis J. Cordes

LAST TIME OUT: Thanks to a furious comeback in the second half, the Texas Longhorns rallied back from a double-digit deficit to snap Iowa State’s 13-game winning streak at Hilton Coliseum with a 55-52 victory. Junior Erika Arriarian kept the Longhorns alive throughout the second half, as she hit six shots and scored 13 of her 16 points in the final 13 minutes of the game.

HOW THEY GOT HERE: The 11th seeded Missouri Tigers gave the Longhorns all they could handle in the Thursday night opener, as Texas came back from a double-digit deficit with a game-ending 9-0 run in the final 97 seconds to win 62-59. Since beating the Cyclones in Ames on Feb 15, the Longhorns have won just two of their last seven games, both of which came against Missouri.

TOP SCORERS:

Brittainey Raven, 13.5 points per game

Kathleen Nash, 11.6 points, 6.5 rebounds per game

Raven and Nash have been the Longhorns’ top scorers all season, but each had significant struggles in finding the basket in Ames early this season. The two combined for just eight points and seven rebounds while shooting 3-17 in the victory against Iowa State.

RUNNING NINE DEEP: Through the duration of the 2008-2009 season, Texas has proven to be the most balanced team in the conference. Of the eleven players that have seen the court for the Longhorns this season, nine of them average 12 minutes or more, and two others average no less than eight. Not one of the eleven players on the roster average more then 26 minutes per game.

QUOTABLE:

“I’m sure they will remember that game, they will come ready to play, and we have to show the same fire, the same desire that we showed at the end of this game, and in the second half of the Oklahoma game. That’s what we have to complete for 40 minutes if we want to be successful.” — Texas head coach Gail Goestenkors on her teams’ previous game with Iowa State, and what they need to be successful in their quarterfinal rematch with the Cyclones.
