WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Wieben’s status for Saturday still questionable

Nate Sandell —

Coach Bill Fennelly said Nicky Wieben’s status for the weekend is still questionable.

As the team prepared to leave for the airport Thursday afternoon, Wieben, a senior post player, was wearing a protective boot over the injured foot.

“X-rays are fine. But right now she is in a boot and hasn’t practiced,” Fennelly said. “So it’s day-to-day, minute-to-minute. If the game was tonight she wouldn’t have played. So hopefully by Saturday night she will be a little bit better.”

Wieben said she is confident she will be ready to play, but will keep the boot on until Saturday.

Although the rest of the team did not appear overly concerned, players are still preparing for the possible absence of Wieben.

“I think she’ll be able to play but right now we have [Jocelyn Anderson] in the line-up,” junior Alison Lacey said. “We are rotating all the post players to get them in there and they did really well at practice today.”

With Iowa State less than a minute away from securing a win over Ball State on Tuesday night, the Cyclones received a bit of a scare when Wieben went down.

As Ball State’s Dana Moorman, closely guarded by senior Wieben, drove towards the basket, Wieben suddenly tumbled to the ground.

“I was trying to get out of the way on defense and my ankle started to turn and my foot just went up,” Wieben said.

Tears streamed down her face, as she laid on the baseline grasping at her left foot. The crowd was finally relieved when Wieben stood to her feet with the help of a trainer and walked off the court under her own power.

“When your adrenaline is going that much when an injury happens it kind of shocks you at first,” Wieben said. “I realized ‘OK you’re alive, you can walk, you’ll be fine.’”
