MEN’S BASKETBALL: Huskers beat Iowa State, 77-61

Iowa State will have to wait until 2010 until its next crack at a conference road win, as they lost their 16th Big 12 road game in a row with a 77-61 loss to Nebraska (17-11, 7-8).

It was deja vu for the Cyclones (14-16, 3-12) as once again on the road they played a competitive first half, but then disappeared in the second.

The Cyclones held a 31-29 lead in the waning seconds of the first half, but five quick points gave Nebraska the momentum and the lead heading into halftime.

Nebraska turned up the pressure after halftime and forced Iowa State into ten second-half turnovers. The Cornhuskers out-scored the Cyclones by 13 points in the second half, which has become a common theme for recent ISU road games.

In six of Iowa State’s eight road losses, they’ve trailed by less than 10 points or had the lead at halftime and then were out-scored by eight points or more in the second half.

The Cornhuskers used a 17-4 run midway through the second half to push the game to 68-49.

Nebraska shot 52 percent from the field, and were led by 24 points from Ade Dagunduro. Cookie Miller, Ryan Anderson and Steve Harley also scored in double digits for the Cornhuskers.

The Cyclones wasted good efforts from Craig Brackins and Lucca Staiger. Both scored in double figures and shot better than 50 percent from the field. Brackins tallied 25 points and 13 boards: his 17th 20-point effort and 13th double-double of the season.

Staiger made five of his first six 3-pointers en route to 17 points. His five 3-pointers gave him 71 bombs for the season which ranks for the seventh-most in school history.

Iowa State has now gone two full seasons without a Big 12-road win. That means only one of the current Cyclones was even on the roster the last time Iowa State tasted victory on the road, but that player was Alex Thompson who was sitting out the year due to transfer rules.

With the loss, the Cyclones have guaranteed themselves either the 10th or 11th seed in the Big 12 Tournament.

Iowa State plays its last regular season game of the season versus Texas Tech at 12:45 on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum.
