Rail Jam canceled

The Rail Jam has been canceled this year, according to the ISU Ski and Snowboard Club Web site.

It was originally scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday on Chamberlain Street.

Jerry Rupert, outdoor recreation coordinator and adviser to the club, said the event had to be canceled for several reasons.

Rupert said because it has been warm the last couple of weeks, there was concern about the quality and quantity of snow.

There was also concern about how performers would be able to build up enough speed in order to do tricks.

“In the past, we had people on four wheelers pulling them,” Rupert said. “There was a safety concern about that.”

He said last year Red Bull provided a wench to pull performers, but this year the company pulled out a couple weeks before the event. Rail Jam considered building a “drop in,” or a ramp performers would go down to build up speed, but found it was too expensive to contract out and the group did not have enough time to build its own.

“We absolutely will be back next year,” Rupert said. “It’s a great event. We just need to get the planning stages done earlier.”
