Heavyweight David Zabriskie likely rolled into the No. 1 ranking in the country on Sunday afternoon.

Zabriskie stunned archrival Jared Rosholt in sudden-death overtime, giving third-ranked Iowa State a pivotal, 3-1 win in a 24-12 victory over 13th-ranked Oklahoma State in Hilton Coliseum. The third-ranked Cyclone junior escaped from what appeared to be a sure takedown by Jared Rosholt, rolling out of the Cowboy’s grasp and directly into a hold of his own.

He finished the takedown and left Rosholt laying on the mat, shaking his head in disbelief.

“It looked like [Zabriskie] was taken down,” said ISU coach Cael Sanderson. “but he just kept on fighting and he found a way to win.”

Rosholt (24-1) was previously undefeated and is currently rated No. 1 nationally. He took Zabriskie down to the mat in overtime and nearly covered him for the deciding points.

Rosholt had won the rivals’ previous two meetings, while Zabriskie (23-2) had won the first four. Missouri’s Mark Ellis is currently ranked second, but is 0-3 against Zabriskie and was replaced by freshman Dom Bradley on Sunday in the Tigers’ 18-14 win over second-ranked Cornell.

“Coming into this match, I just wanted to [get] a little personal revenge,” Zabriskie said. “He got me in Big 12s and NCAAs last year. Those are two pretty important matches, so I figured I’d start this one off right, and pick up another one at the Big 12s.”

Zabriskie’s win gave Iowa State a 15-3 lead at intermission. In the dual’s opening match, sixth-ranked sophomore Jon Reader (165) catalyzed the strong start with a first-period pin over 11th-ranked Brandon Mason.

Reader wrenched Mason to his back and kept him there, pressing his shoulders to the mat for the fall in 2:24.

“You can’t get a better start than that,” Sanderson said. “That was nice against an All-American … that was one of the key matchups, so to get a pin there — and it helped because we knew [Nick] Fanthorpe wasn’t wrestling and we were giving up six [points] there.”

Iowa State (11-2) forfeited the 133-pound weight class due to the injury of seventh-ranked Nick Fanthorpe, who strained his leg during Friday’s 23-15 win over 11th-ranked Oklahoma.

Twentieth-ranked freshman Jerome Ward (184) gave the team a lift with an 8-7 win over Cody Hill.

Ward (14-8) was nearly pinned in the opening minute of the match, but wore out Hill over the course of the match.

“I came out an took a sloppy shot and left my arm up, and he went in my back real fast,” Ward said. “But I just didn’t stop fighting, and got up, and just attacked. I knew I could beat him pretty good if I just stayed on him and got him real tired.”

No. 1 ranked Jake Varner (197) followed with a dominating, 9-2 win over ninth-ranked Clayton Foster.

A 5-3 win by OSU’s Obe Blanc at 125 pounds and the six-point forfeit at 133 pounds cut the Cyclones’ lead to 15-12 heading into the final three matches. Iowa State won all three, including a 5-3 win by Mitch Mueller (149) that secured the dual.

Sanderson liked a lot of what he saw in the dual meet.

“They’re fighting together, coming together. There is always room for improvement; there always will be, regardless of the finish we have, but we’re a team that will get better,” he said. “We’ll be at our best in March, and we’re making that climb right now.”
