HOCKEY: Adrian College hands Cyclones second loss

Iowa State welcomed Adrian College on Friday, looking to extend its winning streak to five games and gain momentum heading into the ACHA Division 1 regular season.

Needless to say, the ISU offense would be held in check by a strong-willed Adrian Bulldog defense, as they would only find the net once.

The first period saw both teams play strong defense and get solid play from their goalies as neither team was able to score.

Both teams found the net in the second period with Adrian scoring first on a goal with 18:58 remaining.Iowa State returned the favor with a goal of its own when forwards Krueger and Majkozak connected with junior forward Brian Spring for a score with 14:34 to go.

Iowa State entered the third period tied at 1 with Adrian. Adrian broke the tie with 13:43 when converted on a power play.

The ISU offense would not have a response. Adrian added onto its lead with another goal with 11:28 to go and tacked on another with 4:59 remaining to extend its lead to 4-1. That would be the final score.

After the game, Coach Al Murdoch congratulated the opposing goalie on his play.

“We ran into a pretty good goal tender,” Murdoch said. “He made a lot of excellent saves in all three periods.”

Murdoch said he hopes tomorrow’s game will allow the team to show its true character.

“We’ll see what the character of team is [tomorrow],” Murdoch said. “We need to bounce back. We have to show everyone we can rebound.”

Junior defenseman Adam Mueller said he believes the team underestimated their opponent.

“I think we kind of underestimated them,” Mueller said. “We have to show up for every game, no game is going to be a walk in the park, we have to show up ready to play. We just need to show focus more on the game.”

Mueller also said that in order to win Saturday’s game, the team needs to capitalize on the opportunities they are given.

“We had our chances [to score],” Mueller said. “We have to figure out how to bury our shots. We’re getting around the net and getting off shots, we just need to get them to go in.”

The loss was Iowa State’s second loss of the season and it also ended its four-home game winning streak. The team will return Saturday night, looking for a series split.
