HOCKEY: No. 8 Cyclones fall to No. 2 Lindenwood in shootout

The packed Ames/ISU Ice Arena witnessed a nail-biting game one of the two game weekend series against Lindenwood University on Friday.

It took a shootout to decide the winner, but in the end it was the No. 2 Lindenwood Lions that would prevail.

The Cyclones opened up the first period against Lindenwood with a solid defensive effort. Sophomore goalie Erik Hudson was able to keep the usually powerful Lindenwood offense scoreless. The Cyclones’ offense, on the other hand, was able to find the net when senior forward Bill Adolph gave Iowa State a 1-0 lead with 14:09 remaining.

Four minutes into the second period, Lindenwood would get on the board with a goal from forward Colin Long. Despite scoring early in the second, the Lions would not be able to score again for the rest of the period.

Iowa State was unable to add to their score in the second period, as they found themselves having a hard time with the Lindenwood defense.

Heading into the third period, the game was tied at one. Twenty-four seconds into the period, Adolph connected with sophomore forward Mike Lebler for a goal that gave Iowa State a 2-1 lead.

The lead would be brief, however, as Lindenwood’s sophomore forward Carson Hamill scored a goal of his own at the 17:32 mark to tie the game at 2.

Iowa State would quickly regain the lead when junior forward Brad Krueger scored with 13:42 remaining, giving Iowa State a 3-2 advantage.

A victory was 3 minutes, 21 seconds away when Lindenwood scored again, tying the game at 3 and ultimately sending the game into overtime.

Neither team was able to score in the overtime period and that would result in a shootout.

Iowa State received quite the scare when Lindenwood’s first attempt looked to be good but hit off the side of the goal and rattled out. The Cyclones’ Lebler was unsuccessful with his first shot attempt as well.

It would be Lindenwood’s second shooter, junior forward Ryan Bond, who would convert and give Lindenwood a 4-3 lead. Adolph would try and answer back but his shot was blocked.

After Hudson stopped Lindenwood’s last attempt it would be up to senior forward Mike Murtaugh to make the shot. Despite his effort, Murtaugh’s shot was blocked and Iowa State fell to Lindenwood 4-3 in a shootout.

After the game, coach Al Murdoch was happy with the effort but not the result.

“We got a good effort, we got some good goaltending from Hudson, he gave us every opportunity to win,” Murdoch said. “Our defense played solid, there were just one or two lapses.”

Murdoch also pointed out that the team did not take the best shots and felt that they could improve in that area.

“We were a bit light [with our shots],” Murdoch said. “Lindenwood beat us there, they took better quality shots. Because of that we need to get the shot off a little quicker and have someone there for the rebound.”

Sophomore forward Cort Bulloch was not happy with the result, but knows the team cannot remain focused on the loss.

“We put up a good fight, we played hard,” Bulloch said. “It’s a little disappointing, but we have a game tomorrow and we have to build off of tonight.”

Iowa State will try to win game 2 against Lindenwood at 8 p.m. Saturday night.
