At the university convocation and awards ceremony Monday, in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union, President Gregory Geoffroy outlined goals for Iowa State in the upcoming year, as well as in the years to come.

In his address, Geoffroy focused on funding. He mentioned the commitment Iowa State has made to lobby for full funding from the state this year.

In addition, he said the university’s goal is to raise $125 million from private fundraising efforts. By June 30, the university plans to have passed the $700 million mark in fundraising for Campaign Iowa State, Geoffroy said. The overall goal for the campaign, launched last year, is to raise $800 million.

“Another very important area of emphasis this year, and one that must be ongoing every year, is the broad area of sustainablity,” Geoffroy said.

Geoffroy specifically spoke about university-wide changes relating to sustainability, such as the formation of the President’s Advisory Committee on Energy Conservation and Global Climate Change, which has created a number of programs and positions committed to sustainability. This has included establishing energy conservation standards for buildings on campus, as well as the creation of a new position: a director of sustainability programs.

“All of this [is] launched under the Live Green! banner, which you will certainly continue to hear much more about as the year goes on,” he said.

“Now it’s not too likely that many of us will be here in 2050,” Geoffroy said, “but there are a few overarching goals that I strongly believe the university must keep firmly in front as we look to that long-range future,” he said.

Geoffroy named the two most important goals he wants Iowa State to achieve by 2050: first, that Iowa State should be known for its contributions in dealing with such problems as food, energy, infrastructure and sustainabilty.

He said Iowa State must be a “treasured resource for Iowa, nation and the world.”

Also by 2050, he said Iowa State “must be a powerful magnet for attracting truly outstanding students to join us to study and learn.”

“We do have great students at Iowa State,” Geoffroy said, “but we must continue to work to bring in the very best students that we can recruit, to raise the overall excellence of the university,” he said.

Geoffroy echoed this sentiment when it came to attracting faculty as well. Geoffroy spoke of creating an environment to attract and retain “world class” faculty.

Currently, a number of leadership positions at the university are being filled, including three college dean positions. Geoffroy said the goal was to fill the positions by the end of the fiscal year.
