Program director faces fraud investigation

A fraud investigation regarding an ISU engineering program director has begun.

No formal charges have been filed against Pamela Reinig, program director of communications and marketing for Iowa State’s engineering department, but a search warrant has been served and sealed, according to ISU Police Lt. Aaron Delashmutt.

Delashmutt said the investigation is still in its preliminary stages and declined to state what has been found up to this point.

Reinig declined to comment over the phone about the investigation, but John McCarroll, executive director of university relations, said she is still employed by Iowa State and that the police have identified the case as a fraud investigation.

McCarroll also confirmed the investigation was instigated by Iowa State’s internal auditing department and started as a possible problem with billing.

“[The case] was described by campus police as fraud investigation,” he said.

“I don’t know if [billing is] the entire problem or just an aspect of the problem. I am not privy to their investigation.”

Iowa State’s internal auditors notified the state about the possible fraud, but an active investigation is yet to begin and is “still pending,” said Tami Kusian, deputy auditor of the state.

“We are aware of the case, but we are not currently in the field,” Kusian said.
