A ‘2nd Date’ out of reach?

Emily Bishop

If dating isn’t your strong point, you may want to take a look at “The Automatic 2nd Date” by Victorya Michaels Rogers, who promises to “teach you how to transform yourself into an intriguing, fun, magnetic woman who actually enjoys the dating process.”

The book is aimed at women who never get past the first date and is based on Rogers’ personal experiences and people in her everyday life. Rogers is a former Hollywood talent agent who learned many of her tips from models, relationship experts and pastors.

The tips in “The Automatic 2nd Date” have also been tested in her everyday life – Rogers went on more than 100 dates in an 18-month period and was asked for a second date 98 percent of the time.

“I began to learn everything a girl needs to do or say on a first date to get an automatic second date (while still respecting herself in the morning),” the author writes.

At times, her tips may seem old-fashioned, but if you haven’t had much dating luck, you may want to give them a try. One tip is “no last-minute dates” to avoid accepting the role of a man’s last choice. Another is taking on a reporter mindset on the first date, learning as much as possible about your date and being an attentive listener.

I was impressed with the book’s focus on self-improvement. Rogers focuses on how to be a magnetic woman who is confident, but can remain discreet. Having a positive attitude and being charismatic can make you feel good about yourself and ultimately lead to more second dates. Rogers believes you must like yourself before you can convince men to like you.

The book has a Christian undertone, but it is not overt and does not get in the way if you are not religious. Her cheery narrative may grow wearying at times, but her experiences and honesty back up her advice.

Although women are the book’s target audience, men could also learn a thing or two. For example, Rogers recommends choosing a comedy or romance for a first-date movie – a serious film can be too much.

Rogers may give you a refreshing look into what can often be a wearisome game for both women and men.
