Gonzalez tenure fight continues

The battle about an ISU professor’s denial of tenure is still not over.

The Discovery Institute’s Center For Science and Culture, a pro-intelligent design organization, where Guillermo Gonzalez, assistant professor of physics and astronomy, is a senior fellow, will be releasing e-mails sent between ISU faculty members. The e-mails were obtained via an open records request and allegedly show faculty conspired to deny Gonzalez tenure. The e-mails will be released in a press conference on Monday.

The press conference will take place at the 11 a.m. in the Senate Chambers in the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines and will include Gonzalez’s attorneys, representatives of the Discovery Institute and “one or more state legislators concerned about the apparent lack of due process in the way the Board of Regents is handling Gonzalez’s appeal,” according to a press release.

John McCarroll, executive director of university relations, said Iowa State was not aware of the content in the e-mails, and the decision is now up to the Board of Regents.

“The decision was made in June. [We’ve] submitted all information to the Board of Regents and it’s up to them to make their decision,” McCarroll said.

Gonzalez was denied tenure back in March and appealed the decision to President Gregory Geoffroy. Geoffroy upheld the decision to deny Gonzalez tenure. Gonzalez has since appealed the decision to the Board of Regents. Critics say Gonzalez was discriminated against because he is a proponent of the theory of intelligent design.
