It was a slow afternoon at Ward 2, Frederiksen Court precinct for City Council votes.

Though Hawthorn Cafe had patrons enjoying their lunch meal, the turnout of students was few.

By 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Don Withers, election administrator, had a tally of only one student voter.

The 58 other Ames residents who voted were not students.

“In the past we have seen anywhere from 120-150 total voters for school board elections,” Withers said.

Withers said he hoped that more student voters would turn out at the end of the day, around the time classes are finished.

James Okey, resident of Ames, has lived in Ames for the past 60 years and has voted in pretty much all the elections.

“Keep our community healthy and progressive,” he said of the why he came out to vote.

One student, Taqwa Gilani, junior in chemical engineering, who was on her break from work, said she didn’t even know what the elections were for.
