Four people were killed and five others injured when a car crashed into a parked motor home on Interstate 35 on Saturday.

The accident happened about 3:20 p.m., closing southbound lanes of I-35. The highway was reopened just after 5 p.m. Officials with the Iowa State Patrol said the accident happened about five miles south of Ames. Four people in the car and one person in the motor home were taken to Des Moines hospitals with unknown injuries. The collision happened when the car drove onto the outside shoulder of the highway and struck a motor home that was parked there, said patrol Sgt. Randy Kunert. He said he believed the motor home was on the shoulder because it had broken down.
