Record collectors to descend on Des Moines show

Local record collectors will get a chance this Sunday to expand their collections beyond what is normally available locally.

This weekend the Des Moines Music Collectors’ Show, hosted by Zzz Records owner Nate Niceswanger, will bring in record dealers from as far away as Texas and Tennessee, offering a variety not usually seen in central Iowa.

Although many of the dealers and fans are passionate record collectors, Niceswanger is quick to assure newcomers and casual collectors they won’t be out of place at the show.

“I think everybody’s pretty open-minded,” said Niceswanger. “If this is your first record show, it’s not a scary experience.”

Despite the show’s name, about 40 percent of the inventory carried by the dealers are CDs, offering choices to the less vinyl-intensive.

Niceswanger said most of the dealers would be coming from out-of-state and they would likely offer a selection that is different from what can be found in most of Iowa.

Most dealers also bring the best of their collections from their homes or stores, so collectors are more likely to find records they’ve been searching for.

Niceswanger described the atmosphere of the show as very casual, with people milling about, searching for favorite records.

Dealers also tend to be quite chatty and helpful, locating items and making recommendations based on customers’ tastes.

Rock is, unsurprisingly, the dominant genre at the show, but Niceswanger expects there will be significant selections of techno, hip-hop, country and jazz.

He also said two dealers at this show will be selling DVDs.

The hardest genres to find, as is typical for the Midwest, will be metal and punk.

One tip Niceswanger gave prospective record hunters was to search through dealers of genres one is not interested in. Specialist dealers frequently price out-of-genre records low to get rid of them.

The last show of this type was held last November, with the next planned for August, a departure from the usual schedule of four shows a year.

The upcoming show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. in the Des Moines Room of the Holiday Inn on 6th Avenue. General admission for the day is $1.
