The Culinary Food Science Club dished up various dishes featuring SPAM at their Tuesday meeting, which was Hawaiian Luau themed. The lively atmosphere had the club members buzzing about the food and catching up with one another.

Members saw this use of SPAM at the luau as fitting, as Hawaii is one of the highest consumers of SPAM.

In the fall, the club took a trip to Minnesota where they toured SPAM’s headquarters. Using their knowledge of the product, they put their skills to the test.

The meeting began with a potluck and time to visit. Students dished up various Hawaiian-themed dishes that incorporated SPAM. Sushi, hot ham-and-cheese sandwiches, crackers and dip and fried rice were all provided for members to taste test, and all creatively contained SPAM as their main ingredient.

However, the Culinary Food Science Club focuses on more than fun and SPAMBLES. President of the club, Jake Manternach, a junior studying food science, spoke about the club’s purpose and offerings to students.

“We want to provide a relaxed environment, something enjoyable and fun for everyone,” Manternach said. “But we also want to provide career development opportunities.”

Through industry tour trips in the fall and spring, participation in culinary competitions and professional development, the Culinary Food Science Club aims to prepare individuals of any major for future employment. The club serves as a way to network with other students as well as to offer opportunities for learning outside of the classroom.
