KANSAS CITY, Mo. — All the ISU men’s basketball team can do now is wait until Sunday when its postseason fate is — or isn’t — announced.

After falling to Texas Tech 64-56 on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Conference tournament, Iowa State’s future is in the hands of the NCAA tournament selection committee.

Senior center Jared Homan said he hopes its name will be called on Sunday.

“We should have won this game; it would have given us a better chance,” Homan said. “If we don’t get in, it’s our fault.”

Saturday and Sunday are just going to be regular days, sophomore Curtis Stinson said.

“We don’t sit back and cry and worry about Selection Sunday,” Stinson said. “We’re just going to see what happens. We’re not going to be stressed out worry about anything. We will see what happens.”

The game was close throughout the contest, but in the first half, Tech put itself ahead 34-24 with 2:36 remaining. Iowa State fought right back using steals and fastbreak layups to trim the deficit. With just two seconds remaining, Will Blalock got a steal and ran the length of the court to get basket at the buzzer to cut the Tech lead to 34-32 at halftime.

Homan kept the Cyclones in the half with 12 points on 6-of-17 shooting. He also had seven rebounds, six of them on the offensive end, and four blocks.

Sophomores Stinson and Will Blalock also added eight points each.

Stinson took over in the second half, helping Iowa State take a 50-42 lead with 9:25 remaining. That lead was cut to three after a Devonne Giles 3-pointer with 6:00 left.

With just over two minutes remaining, the Red Raiders started to take over.

Free throws were key for Tech, as it was 8-of-8 from the line in the last minute to secure the win and remain alive in the conference tournament.

“I give Texas Tech a lot of credit; they stepped up when they needed to,” Homan said. “I thought down the stretch they were very disciplined. I thought they really stepped up their defense and physical presence and we just couldn’t counter that.”

Homan was held to just two points in the second half.

“I missed easy shots and I take responsibility for that,” Homan said. “I didn’t feel like I had a good game.”

A big difference in the game was fouls and free throws. In the first half, Iowa State committed six fouls and Tech had two, its second coming with 34 seconds left in the second half. For the game, Iowa State had 21 fouls and shot 4-of-5 from the free throw line. Tech committed 11 fouls and was 14-of-18 from the line.

Iowa State also had 17 turnovers to Tech’s 14. The Raiders took advantage and scored 17 points off the Cyclones’ turnovers.

Wayne Morgan said those turnovers were a key to the game.

“I thought [Tech] handled the pressure well,” Morgan said. “I thought they didn’t turn the ball over. We turned the ball over 17 times and they weren’t pressing us.”

Jarrius Jackson led the Raiders with 20 points and Giles added 13.

Stinson finished the game 24 points, Homan with 14 and Blalock with 12. Homan led the Cyclones with 12 rebounds, and Damion Staple pulled down 10.

Despite the loss, Morgan he is proud of his team and that the Cyclones should be proud of themselves.

“They have nothing to be ashamed about today,” Morgan said. “They played and tried as hard as they could. You still have to give credit to Texas Tech; they played good defense and made some tough shots.

After winning 10 of its last 13 games and four of those against top 25 teams, Morgan said his team has accomplished a lot after starting the conference season 0-5.

“It was a heck of a game today. Very competitive game,” Morgan said. “It was a very entertaining game for the fans today also. Obviously, I wish the last five, six minutes could have been different.”

Texas Tech will play top seed Oklahoma at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The 65-team NCAA bracket will announced at 5 p.m. Sunday on CBS, which is channel 8 in Ames.
