Scoring stampede

On the night when Anne O”Neil crossed the 1,000-point plateau, her teammates joined the scoring onslaught and handed Colorado a 103-76 setback.

After a slow start in the first half, No. 18 Iowa State (17-2, 7-1 Big 12) started the second half with a 3-point scoring barrage, as Mary Fox, Lyndsey Medders, Megan Ronhovde, Lisa Kriener and O”Neil all knocked in treys. The Cyclones connected on 10 3-pointers in the second half, totaling a season-high 15 for the game.

‘I didn”t think they missed, did they?’ Colorado head coach Ceal Barry said. ‘It seemed like they hit everything. They just were hot and my team is young and they”re tired. They”re a little overwhelmed, and, to be honest with you, I think they”re exhausted.’

O”Neil scored 15 points by halftime and finished the game one rebound shy of the first-ever triple-double in team history with 18 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.

But it was Ronhovde who stole the show, connecting on 6 of 6 3-pointers on her way to a career-high 24 points.

The sophomore said it was a good feeling when the first shot went in.

‘After I hit those first couple, it just obviously felt like it was on tonight,’ Ronhovde said. ‘I”ve just kind of been focusing after practice and getting some extra shots up.’

Fennelly said after missing 13 shots in a row earlier in the season and not making anything in a shootaround earlier Wednesday, Ronhovde found her stroke.

‘Megan was on fire tonight. She struggled [previously], but she keeps shooting,’ Fennelly said.

O”Neil let the flow of the game come to her, and with seven minutes gone in the game, she became the 16th Cyclone to score 1,000 career points.

‘That”s a big thing; I”m not sure I ever thought it was possible, especially in three years,’ O”Neil said. ‘I”m glad it happened, but it wouldn”t have been as exciting if we couldn”t have gotten the win.’

The bench was aware of O”Neil”s stat line, and Fennelly said he asked her if she wanted to stay in for another rebound, but O”Neil said she wanted to let the others to play.

‘That”s someone who”s a leader and understands the big picture,’ Fennelly said.

Three other Cyclones scored in double-digits, with Kriener, Katie Robinette and Fox scoring 14, 13 and 11, respectively.

It was a back-and-forth game early on until Iowa State went on a 9-0 run to get a 19-10 edge. Colorado battled back, aided by eight Cyclone turnovers.

Iowa State pushed the lead to 17 points late in the first half when Fox and O”Neil hit back-to-back 3-pointers. The Cyclones took a 47-34 lead going into halftime, shooting 63 percent and holding Colorado to 36 percent.

Jasmina Ilic led the Buffaloes in scoring with 22 points; she also had 10 rebounds as the Buffaloes fell to 8-11 (1-7 Big 12).
