Taylor’s jersey retired

It was a setting Megan Taylor felt comfortable in. Standing at center court with a rousing ovation from the 6,935 fans in attendance, Taylor became the third ISU women’s basketball player to have her jersey retired Sunday.

Taylor said she first got the news with a phone call from ISU head coach Bill Fennelly.

“I was very honored, but [it was] a little weird once you’re done,” she said.

Taylor said getting the award was awkward because she is now at a different stage in her life.

“I’ve been gone for three of four years, and I’m in a different place right now, but the more I thought about it, I thought this is really cool,” Taylor said.

Taylor is attending St. Cloud State as a graduate student in sports management. She is also in her first season as a graduate assistant coach with the women’s basketball team.

The relationships Taylor garnered with her teammates are some her fondest memories of her time at Iowa State.

“We still keep in touch,” Taylor said, referring to former Cyclone players like Angie Welle, Monica Huelman, Sarah Robson and Stacy Frese.

Taylor, a 5-foot-10 guard from Roseau, Minn., started every game of her ISU career.

She finished with school records in field goal attempts, 3-pointers made and 3-point attempts. She was also ranked in the top 10 in 12 of 17 career statistical categories.

The third leading scorer in ISU history, Taylor finished her career with 1,866 points, averaging 14.1 per game.

She hauled in 25 career double-doubles and was a four-time all-conference performer. In 1998, Taylor was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year.

Before Taylor arrived in Ames, Iowa State had never won a tournament or regular conference title; the Cyclones won three while Taylor was on the team.
