The ISU football team showed its appreciation for senior captain Ellis Hobbs as he was awarded the Pete Taylor MVP Award at the Cyclones team banquet Sunday.

“It’s a respect factor because the guys on this team picked it and they felt I give enough out there above and beyond to get the most valuable player award,” Hobbs said.

Hobbs was also awarded the Al and Dean Knudson Award as the team’s outstanding defensive player and he shared the Jim Doran Award as Iowa State’s outstanding special teams player with deep snapper Landon Schrage and wide receiver Ryan Baum.

Bret Meyer won the Ray Scott Award as the Cyclones outstanding offensive player. The freshman passed for 1,812 yards, completing 53.1 percent of his throws. Meyer threw for 10 touchdowns and rushed for another two, while throwing six interceptions.

The Durwood “Dury” Moss Award awarded to the outstanding newcomer went to Todd Blythe. The second-team all-Big 12 selection caught a school-record nine touchdown passes en route to racking up 791 receiving yards.

Seniors Tyson Smith and Brandon Brown were presented the Ennis Haywood Award voted on by coaches for effort in games, practice and off the field. Smith has 49 tackles and five sacks for the Cyclones. Brown notched 63 tackles before sustaining a season-ending injury against Nebraska on Nov. 6.

The Bill Dailey Award for players who make great contributions with little public recognition went to Todd Miller and Shawn Moorehead. Miller split time at wide receiver and punt returner and has 322 receiving yards and 165 return yards with one touchdown on the year. Moorehead, a freshman defensive end, has 41 tackles and three sacks for the Cyclone defense.

Big 12 defensive newcomer of the year Tim Dobbins earned the Don Holder Award given to the Cyclone who handles life’s challenges and adversities while competing for Iowa State.

Eight Cyclone players were recognized with the Winner’s Performance Award, which is given to players who excelled in position techniques, consistent play, production, effectiveness and discipline.

Hobbs and fellow seniors Erik Anderson, James Wright, Brown, Miller, and juniors Nick Leaders, Nik Moser, and Steve Paris were the recipients.
