Women start season off hot

At the beginning of the ISU women’s basketball season, head coach Bill Fennelly wanted more offense — and that’s exactly what he got in the Cyclones’ first two games.

Against Cleveland State on Nov. 21, Katie Robinette captured her first ISU double-double, as the Cyclones clobbered the Vikings 95-46.

Robinette scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds; she had 14 points and 10 rebounds in the first 18 minutes.

Cyclone guard Anne O’Neil also scored 18 points in the first half.

Cleveland State kept the game close, trailing 28-22 with less than seven minutes remaining in the first half, but Iowa State went on a 22-0 run to close the half.

“The teams that we’ve had here in the past — the teams that were good and the fans enjoyed watching so much — we did things like that to people, and last year people did it to us,” Fennelly said.

On Nov. 22, the Cyclones scored early and often and trounced the Northern Colorado Bears 76-36.

The Cyclones jumped out to an early 16-0 lead in the first five minutes of the contest and never looked back.

“I thought we got out of the gate pretty quick, and that took a lot out of [Northern Colorado] — it was their third game in four nights,” Fennelly said.

Both Mary Fox and Robinette chipped in 12 points, while O’Neil added 11 points and nine rebounds.

Fennelly said there were a couple areas of concern — the Cyclones scored only 18 points in the second half, going 1 of 13 behind the three-point arch.

“We just couldn’t throw the ball in the basket at all,” he said.

Next on the slate for the Cyclones is Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne on Monday night. IPFW will enter the game with a 0-3 record.

Senior Tracy Paustian said no matter the level of the competition, it’s good to get to play someone other than themselves.

“Any game situation is great,” she said.

“There are some things you can’t simulate in practice, so any chance you get to play in a game is an advantage.”
