Voting station may be canceled

The Iowa attorney general’s office will determine whether a satellite voting station can be run at Parks Library on Monday.

The date for early balloting was set after a satellite voting station at the library closed with potential voters still in line on Oct. 21. More than 100 potential voters were not able to cast ballots, even though Iowa law requires satellite voting stations to close only after everyone in line at the scheduled closing time has voted.

A day later, officials announced a replacement voting opportunity on Nov. 1.

However, because of a provision in Iowa Administrative Code, voting that day may be cancelled, said Story County Auditor Mary Mosiman.

“I don’t want to compound the problems from the situation of last Thursday,” Mosiman said.

Mosiman said in order to legally set up a voting time and place, a legal notice of publication must be posted seven days in advance. The notice for Nov. 1 missed the noon deadline for publication in the official county paper, The Tribune.

Mosiman said she is waiting on word from the attorney general’s office to find out if the publication requirement can be waived.

“I’m still uncertain how to do that without jeopardizing the vote,” she said.

Mosiman said she regretted the problem that created the questions surrounding the new station.

“I wish we would have had them wait,” she said. “It was a decision on my part that I wish I would have rethought.”
