Texas A&M sweeps ISU softball matches

All it took was one pitch.

Texas A&M’s Adrian Gregory broke a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run off a 1-2 pitch from freshman Alyssa Ransom to lift the Aggies to a 3-0 win over the ISU softball team Sunday.

The Aggies took the weekend two-game series, winning Saturday’s game by the same score, allowing only one Cyclone hit. Texas A&M improved to 22-16 overall and 4-1 in the conference, and the Cyclones dropped to 9-19 and 1-3 in Big 12 play.

“[Ransom] was great,” ISU head coach Ruth Crowe said. “She threw one bad pitch. Gregory is a great hitter for A&M and a great hitter in the Big 12. [It was a] 1-2 count, Ransom gave her too close of a pitch to hit and that kid is an aggressive swinger.”

Texas A&M would score two more insurance runs in the seventh inning. Both teams battled in the first six innings as both Ransom and Aggies pitcher Lindsay Wilhelmson got out of some big jams.

In the second inning, Ransom threw a wild pitch with runners on second and third, but then struck out Wilhelmson to end the Aggie threat.

With Kim Rodgers and Cary Akins in scoring position and one out, Texas A&M used a four-player rundown to get Rodgers out on what was supposed to be a suicide squeeze play. Wilhelmson then got Fallon Johnson to ground out for the third out.

Wilhelmson and Jessica Kapchinski combined to allow four Cyclones hits and record six strikeouts.

Ransom allowed eight hits and had four strikeouts as she fell to 7-10 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

“We should have scored early in the game,” Crowe said. “Wilhelmson was throwing drop pitches. We were swinging at bad pitches. We didn’t have good focus and didn’t swing at good pitches.”

The Cyclones were able to manage only five total hits during the weekend. Iowa State’s Julia Lindsay said the Cyclones need to improve in that area the rest of the season.

“We need to cash in and take advantage,” Lindsay said, “especially if they’re going to bring their No. 1 pitcher. No matter who they bring, we need to swing at the good pitches, take the bad ones and just try to stay up in the count.”

In Saturday’s game, the Aggies used a three-run fourth inning to win 3-0. Gunter drove in two runs and Kapchinski struck out 10 in the win.

The Cyclones’ Jessica Quade got the lone hit. Ransom had two strikeouts.

Crowe said the Cyclones need to work on their hitting if they want to gain some wins during the second half of the season.

“Part of it is inexperience,” Crowe said. “Because we’ve got so many new kids in the lineup, it’s just a mentality you have to have. You’ve got to have confidence, and you’ve got to be able to execute. It’s little tiny things, if you’re not hitting, you’ve got to have other things working too.”

Iowa State will travel to Nebraska on Wednesday with the game time set at 4 p.m.
