Cyclone volleyball team needs consistency to beat Kansas

Following a disappointing five-game loss to Texas Tech Wednesday, the ISU volleyball team is looking to get back into the win column Saturday when it faces Kansas at 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.

The Cyclones fell to Texas Tech Wednesday, 30-17, 21-30, 25-30, 30-17, 13-15. Iowa State’s record is now 11-16 overall and 3-13 in Big 12 play.

“We just have to come in Saturday with the attitude to win and play like we know how to play, because I don’t know what team was out there [Wednesday night],” sophomore Ashlie McWee said.

Iowa State and Kansas met earlier this season in Lawrence, Kan. The Jayhawks won the Oct. 17 matchup 3-0.

“We didn’t challenge them at all in terms of how we served at them and how we ball-handled,” ISU head coach Linda Crum said. “We were very inconsistent.

“My biggest challenge to my kids is to show up and compete because the moments that we did compete against Kansas, it was a very competitive match. We had a really flat night when we played against them.”

Kansas is coming off its third straight win, as it swept Oklahoma 3-0 Wednesday night. The Jayhawks are 17-9 overall and 9-6 in Big 12 action.

Sarah Rome is leading the Kansas offense with 365 kills, averaging 3.5 kills per game and also 3.2 digs per game. Ashley Michaels and Josi Lima average 3.2 and 3.0 kills per game, respectively.

The Cyclones continue to change their lineup, inserting new players into game situations, but those changes don’t affect the flow or the communication of the team, McWee said.

“Communication should be natural with everyone,” McWee said. “This is a game where you must talk all the time, regardless of who is out on the court. We go through this in practice, so everyone knows what is expected of them.”

With just four matches remaining in the season, McWee said she would like to see the team win at least a couple more matches.

“I’d like to see us compete with these teams and show that we are a much better team than in the past,” McWee said. “We can compete, win and take matches and games off the rest of the teams that we play. We just have to go out there and compete.”
