Iowa State moved one step closer to recording a team effort in a tournament Tuesday, finishing the Baylor Invitational in seventh place.

Senior Jeremy Lyons was a sixth-place individual golfer, recovering from an opening-round 78 with rounds of 67 and 69 Monday and Tuesday.

ISU head coach Jay Horton said he was happy to see Lyons and sophomore Tyler Swanson, who shot 71-71-76-218, playing well at the same time.

But he wants more from the Cyclone team.

“I was happy to kind of get Jeremy going,” he said. “Now I need to get a third and fourth and fifth guy going [with Lyons and Swanson].”

The Cyclones’ team score of 882 put them three strokes ahead of eighth-place Wichita State.

Texas Tech and Texas-San Antonio tied for fifth place, six strokes ahead of the ISU team total.

After Lyons and Swanson, who tied for 14th place, the ISU scorecard saw sophomore Drew Dalziel shoot an 8-over-par 75-74-75-224, freshman Curtis Foster tally an 80-74-75-229 and senior Clark Smith finish at 77-80-77-234.

“We’re competing in these things to win,” Horton said. “To compete, we need three, four, five [top] finishers.”

Horton said Lyons has been dealing with first-round struggles throughout the fall season but played with consistency later in the Baylor tournament.

“He came back really solid the last two rounds,” Horton said. “He showed true leadership.”

All the ISU golfers could improve at translating practice performance into tournament success, Horton said.

“We need to take this confidence on the road,” he said.

The Cyclones’ next tournament is the Nestl‚ Purina Classic, next Monday and Tuesday in St. Charles, Mo.

Horton said it will be an important event for the men’s golf team.

“It will set up our spring, the way we play in this next tournament,” he said. “We just need to finish strong.”

Louisiana State won the Baylor Invitational team championship, shooting a 4-over-par 868 — 14 shots in front of Iowa State. Chris Stroud of Lamar was the individual champion with a 14-under-par 202, eight shots in front of his nearest competitor.
