The ISU volleyball team will face Texas for the second time this season when the Longhorns come to Ames Sunday for a 1 p.m. match.

Texas won the first meeting between the two teams, Sept. 17, in three games: 30-17, 30-22, 31-29.

Texas hit .272 from the floor and collected 44 kills to Iowa State’s 36. Texas also had the edge defensively, with 32 digs to Iowa State’s 24.

“Texas is a team that we can definitely beat,” said senior setter Lindsey Chapman. “We definitely did not play as well as we could against Texas at Texas, so we are really looking forward to having them on our home court.”

Iowa State is coming off a five-game loss to Colorado on Wednesday.

“I think Texas and Colorado are very similar,” head coach Linda Crum said. “Texas is a big offensive and blocking team. They don’t defend as well as Colorado but they are definitely aggressive at offense and blocking.”

Texas averages 15.6 kills per game. They also have 58 solo blocks to their opponents’ 20, and 272 block assists to their opponents’ 219.

The Longhorns are led by juniors Mira Topic and Bethany Howden who average 4.4 and 4.5 kills per game, respectively.

Freshman Jenny Andrew is averaging 11.9 assists per game and sophomore Erin Larson averages 3.47 digs per game for Texas.

Texas is 11-10 overall and 6-6 in Big 12 play. The Longhorns are coming off a 3-1 upset of No. 24 Missouri: 30-28, 21-30, 40-38, 32-20.

The win was Texas’ second over a ranked team this season. The Longhorns defeated No. 22 Texas A&M on Oct. 1.

“If we can stay focused and serve like we did [against Colorado], I think we will have the same opportunity to win on Sunday,” Crum said.

“We have to be able to finish at a critical moment and have consistency in terms of our attack.”
