An Ames juvenile will spend two years at the State Training School in Eldora after pleading guilty to one count of vehicular homicide.

Timothy Lozano, 16, pleaded guilty Sept. 24 to the charges in juvenile court.

Lozano ran a stop sign May 18, which caused the Volvo he was driving to crash into Linda Chittenden’s vehicle, killing her on impact.

Lozano and the other passengers of the car fled the scene of the accident.

Police said all individuals in the car were under age 16. Chittenden was 54.

The Volvo was traveling more than 50 mph when it crashed into the driver’s side of Chittenden’s Ford Contour. Lozano, who was 15 at the time of the accident, did not have a driver’s license.

According to court documents, Lozano appeared in court with his attorney, Adria Stonehocker, and his father.

Members of the victim’s family were also in court and presented victim impact statements.

In the plea agreement reached, the Story County Attorney’s office agreed to drop additional charges in exchange for a guilty plea on the vehicular homicide charge.

Lozano will also make restitution to Chittenden’s family, according to court documents. The amount of that restitution has not been determined.

The court also determined Lozano should attend victim offender mediation.

The victim’s family is not required to attend this mediation if they chose not to. If the victim’s family does not attend, Lozano will be required to write a letter of apology.

Stonehocker and the Story County Attorney’s Office could not be reached for comment.
