Revenge.

It’s what the ISU men’s hockey team will be seeking Friday as the team competes in the first ever American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I Showcase. All games will be played in the Ice Line Arena Complex in West Chester, Pa.

The Cyclones will be out to get defending American Collegiate Hockey Association national champion Penn State, who knocked off the Cyclones 3-2 in overtime last season in the national tournament.

“It’s definitely something we’ve been looking forward to ever since the beginning of the season,” junior forward Scott Hagen said. “We definitely want revenge. We’ve got to keep our heads because you’ve got to respect them.

“They’re a good team, but I really feel that we’re going to take it to them [this] weekend. We’re definitely up for the challenge.”

Twenty teams will be featured in the showcase, including 14 teams ranked in the Hockey Association’s preseason poll.

The No. 8 Cyclones takes on No. 1 Penn State at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, ISU will face No. 18 Mercyhurst College at 5:15 p.m. and on Sunday, the team will play Lehigh University at 9 a.m.

Iowa State (3-3-0 ACHA, 2-1-1 Central States Collegiate Hockey League) is coming off a sweep of No. 7 Eastern Michigan last weekend, 2-0 and 6-2. Hagen and junior forward Travis Fast each had two goals in Saturday’s game.

With the showcase being the first road trip of the season for the Cyclones, head coach Alan Murdoch said the 11 freshmen on the team will have a new experience.

“It will be big for them, a new experience,” Murdoch said. “Three games in three days — it gives them a feel of what it’s like at nationals.”

Murdoch said he wanted the team to play some eastern teams early in the season.

“Opening against Penn State is pretty big,” Murdoch said. “Both [Mercyhurst and Lehigh] are good solid Eastern teams. That’s what we wanted to do, we wanted to play some Eastern schools.”

Fast said the team is playing well together early in the season.

“We’ll just keep doing what we’re doing and see what happens,” Fast said. “It’ll be a good measuring stick of where we’re at right now.”
