First meeting with Drake ends in defeat

DES MOINES — The Drake women’s soccer team provided an answer to a trivia question about intrastate play in only its second season of competition.

The Bulldogs won their first-ever meeting with Iowa State as they defeated the Cyclones 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the James W. Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines.

Drake improves to 7-5 overall and Iowa State drops to 3-5-3.

“I feel that we came out flat today. I am not going to make up any excuses,” said ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “I don’t think we played at the level we’re capable of.

“I know we had a tough overtime game on Friday night. It took us awhile to get going in the first half. I think we came out and played better in the second half.”

Kristin Underwood scored the only goals for Drake, both in the first half. At the six-minute mark, she put a shot past Cyclone goalkeeper Beth Chapman to the right corner. In the 23rd minute, she took a pass from Cindi Brenner and chested in the ball.

“Scoring a goal that early, sometimes it’s a blessing or a curse,” said Drake head coach Corbin Stone.

“Scoring that early, I think it made it in some ways more difficult, cause they had to come a little bit harder and faster.”

In the first half, Iowa State outshot Drake 8-7. The Cyclones had a few opportunities to put a shot in the net, but Bulldog goaltender Kate Stack made critical saves.

The teams battled in the second half as Chapman and Stack amounted some big saves. The play was physical as Drake had 12 fouls to Iowa State’s seven.

Sophomore midfielder Deb Benakis put the Cyclones on the board in the 88th minute of the second half as she scored off a penalty kick, but it was too late.

“We just didn’t come to get it done today,” Benakis said. “We just couldn’t figure it out.”

Hornbacher said she liked how Drake was playing in their second year. “I think Corbin is doing a fantastic job with the program,” she said. “They’ve had some good wins already this season.”

“I knew that they were a strong team and we were going to have a battle today. [I give] credit to Drake for coming out and playing well. They’ve got some talent on their team, and I think they’re definitely going to have a good program.”
