After losing their season home opener, the ISU women’s soccer team will take the field at the McClimon Soccer Complex in Madison, Wis., for the Rocky Rococo Wisconsin Invitational.

The loss to DePaul on Sunday put the Cyclones at 2-1 for the season.

ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said her team will be ready to bounce back from the loss.

“The loss was a great learning opportunity and that’s exactly what we’re going to take from this,” Hornbacher said. “We have to move forward and get better.”

On Friday, the Cyclones will take on host Wisconsin at 7:30 p.m. Wisconsin, predicted to finish third in the Big 10 preseason coaches’ poll, is 3-1 on the season and is coming off a 3-2 victory over Kansas.

Iowa State will be watching out for Wisconsin’s Jenny Kundert, who was named Big 10 Offensive Player of the Week Monday. Kundert has three goals, two assists for eight points on the season.

The Badgers are also led by Katy Lindenmuth who has four points. Last season, Wisconsin defeated the Cyclones 4-0 in the Cyclone Classic.

Cyclone senior defender Arlene Samuel said the team may work on their defensive shape in preparation for the weekend games, if it sticks with the 3-5-2 formation.

“We just have to organize it more on the defense, midfield and just how to play in the zone,” Samuel said. “If the players are coming into the zone, we just have to pick them up. We have to organize the runs and where the ball is attacking from.”

Kristina Baumann, who took a team-high six shots for the Cyclones in the DePaul game, said the team practiced keeping possession of the ball during the week.

“A lot of times, we bypassed the midfield,” Baumann said. “We worked on connecting through the midfield through the forwards and connecting our passes better.”

On Sunday, Iowa State will take on Michigan at 11 a.m. The Wolverines, who were ranked No. 17 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas preseason poll and finished 16-7-2 last season, have started slow in the young season and currently sit at 0-3-1. Michigan is coming off a 2-1 loss to Southern California.

Michigan’s Kate Morgan and Erika Kleinholz have five points each. Seven freshmen Wolverines are seeing time on the field this year. One freshman, Katelin Spencer, has contributed an assist to the Wolverine cause this season.

Hornbacher said ISU players’ main goal for the weekend is to work on improving their defense.

“Our girls needs to sharpen and not make the defensive errors like we did on Sunday,” Hornbacher said. “I think they’ll be ready to respond we when play in the tournament.”
