Iowa State is still looking for its first Big 12 volleyball win after losing to No. 7 Nebraska 3-0 Wednesday.

The Cyclones kept it close in the first game with Iowa State leading 12-10 at one point, but the Cornhuskers were able to hold on for the 30-25 win.

“We served aggressively and took them out of their system offensively,” head coach Linda Crum said. “We passed the ball well and had a lot of our hitters one-on-one with their blockers, so we took advantage of them defensively a little bit.”

Game 2 started out well for the Cyclones as they took an early 9-5 lead. Nebraska was able to tie the game at 11-11 and eventually win 30-20.

” We did a great job in how we started game two,” Crum said. “We were very physical and had a lot of blocks in the first half.”

Solo blocks by senior Lindsey Chapman and sophomore Ashlie McWee were two exciting, physical plays in the beginning series of game two, Crum said.

The Cornhuskers dominated Game 3, winning the game 30-14 and the match, 3-0.

Iowa State fell to 7-6 overall and 0-3 in Big 12 play. Nebraska’s record improved to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in league play.

“I think the biggest thing is the kids having the expectations that this is our standard for competing and that’s what we expect for our level of competition,” Crum said.

There were 4,173 people in attendance, the most to see an ISU match since the inception of the Big 12 Conference in 1997.

“It was a lot of Nebraska fans, but they are knowledgeable fans, so that no matter who wins the rally, they are cheering,” Crum said.

“That’s what you want in a Big 12 atmosphere: A lot of fans and fans that love volleyball.”

The Cyclones’ next match is Saturday when they travel to Boulder, Colo., to take on the Buffaloes.

Crum said Colorado is a young team that has lost good middle and outside players and is using a new setter.

“We have to be a little more physical in terms of what we do with our blocking and how we terminate at the net offensively,” Crum said. “Our serving and passing have been very good and have put us in a position where we can compete.”

Colorado is coming off a 3-2 loss to No. 25 Texas A&M. The team is 9-4 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 play.

Recently, the Cyclones have been trying new things at the setter position, using both Chapman and sophomore Amanda Craig.

“We are just trying to get some different things happening,” Crum said. “Sometimes it is to see if we can run some different play sets in the middle or sometimes to see what we can get out of the back row defense. In the match, what we feel is maybe something might give us an edge or make us more stable.”
