An ISU student and former Cyclone football player died Wednesday from injuries sustained in a three-vehicle accident in north Ames.

Matt Grosserode, senior in finance, played fullback for the Cyclones from 2000-2002. He was not on the squad this season.

Two other drivers and one passenger were taken with Grosserode to Mary Greeley Medical Center, Ames Police Department officials said.

Grosserode was pronounced dead at the hospital. One other driver and his passenger were treated and released, while the third driver is in serious condition.

Officers were called to the scene of the accident at 24th St. and Kent Ave. at about 1:04 p.m., according to a report from the Ames Police.

At his media day press conference Wednesday, ISU head coach Dan McCarney said he had just heard the news about the accident. Grosserode’s name was not released at that time because officials were working to contact his family. Grosserode is a native of Lincoln, Neb.

The Ames Police Department is continuing to investigate the accident.

Grosserode was a member of St. Josheph’s Catholic church, Lincoln.

He is survived by his parents John and Joann; brothers PJ, Danny and Mitchell; sister Tara; grandparents Dorothy Grosserode and David and Margaret Novacek, all of Lincoln, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather Paul Grosserode.

There will be a funeral Mass on Monday, August 11 at 10:30 am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 1940 South 77th Street, Lincoln, Nebraska. Father Michael Moon will conduct the services.

Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.

A Rosary service will take place 4:00 PM Sunday at the church.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be left to Pius X High School.

Visitation will be held after 5:00 PM Friday at Butherus, Maser & Love funeral home, 4040 A Street and prior to Rosary at St. Joseph’s.
