GSB to distribute student parking passes randomly

The Government of the Student Body will be working with the Dean of Students office this week to distribute 50 Iowa State Center parking passes for football games, GSB president Mike Banasiak said.

The student passes supplement the 98 paved spaces in parking lot B-3, which will be reserved for the general public on football game days.

Banasiak said the preliminary plan is to send a campus-wide e-mail early this week, probably Tuesday, asking students to reply if they are interested in receiving a season pass for the northernmost lots in the Iowa State Center.

After the replies are collected, 50 students who replied will be randomly selected to receive the passes, Banasiak said.

It would be too difficult logistically to redistribute the passes for each of Iowa State’s seven home games, he said.

Other general public parking will be located in grass lots east of Elwood Drive near the College of Veterinary Medicine. Most stadium lots and most of the Iowa State Center lots are now reserved for National Cyclone Club members.

The plan, combining 98 general parking spaces and 50 student passes, was part of a compromise struck in July between ISU students and administrators.

Students were also presented with the option of receiving even more paved parking near Jack Trice Stadium and tented space for pregame gatherings, but with a prohibition on alcohol.

A student-only parking area sponsored by the university, ISU officials said, would need to be alcohol-free, especially because many ISU students are not 21.

The 2003 football season begins with the Cyclones hosting Northern Iowa Saturday at 6 p.m.

Parking lots will open at noon. General public parking in grass and gravel lots is $5, while parking in lot B-3 will cost $7 per game.

The minimum membership in the National Cyclone Club, which includes an Iowa State Center parking pass for all football games, is $50.
