Gymnasts head south for triangular

The ISU gymnastics team is looking to get back into the win column this weekend when it heads to Gainesville, Fla., to compete in a triangular with the Florida Gators and the Denver Pioneers Friday night.

The Cyclones who are 2-4 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 conference action are coming off a 195.275-196.275 loss to Nebraska last Friday night.

The team has been working hard in preparation for the meet.

“We are coming off a few problems on bars and beam, so that has been our main focus,” head coach K.J. Kindler said.

The Cyclones have already competed against the Pioneers when they traveled to participate in a meet that also included Penn State on Jan. 25.

The Cyclones ended that meet in third place.

“It wasn’t our best meet,” Kindler said. “I did feel that the team wasn’t confident at that time. I feel now that they’ve had time to build confidence since then.”

It will be a homecoming of sorts for two Cyclones who will be competing in their home state. Senior Karen Kuplicki is from Seminole, Fla., and sophomore Susan Stock is from Deltona.

“Last year when we went down, Susan wasn’t competing. So this is her first year really in the lineup and making a difference for our team,” Kindler said. “I think it will be good for her to be in front of a home crowd and family and friends.”

Despite the loss last weekend, the Cyclones have had a good week of practice.

“Everyone is healthy. Karen had some jammed fingers in the last meet and didn’t compete on floor but I plan on her competing on floor again this week,” Kindler said.

Freshman Krystal Carney also used this week of practice to learn a new, more difficult vault. If the final practices go well before the meet, she may be put into the lineup, Kindler said.
