The No. 20 ISU gymnastics team was able to take second place Friday night in Gainesville, Fla., at the Florida Triangular.

With a score of 195.825, the Cyclones defeated the No. 12 Denver Pioneers, who had a score of 195.475, but fell to No. 6 Florida, which scored 197.475.

Iowa State’s record is now 3-5. Florida improves to 13-2 and Denver falls to 4-5.

Head coach K.J. Kindler was proud of the team and especially happy they were able to get redemption for a loss to Denver on Jan. 25.

“We feel great about our performance. We were able to beat the No. 12 team in the nation even though we lost to them out there earlier this year,” Kindler said.

“That wasn’t our greatest performance. But we were able to get it done on a neutral floor.”

Kindler applauded the team’s effort on the uneven bars and the balance beam which are normally trouble areas for the Cyclones.

“We did very well on the bars and beam. They were the best performances all year,” Kindler said.

“Normally they are our trouble areas but the girls were able to put together great performances and show they are a great team. Beam was one of the best performances I’ve seen since I’ve been here.”

Cyclone freshman Erin Dethloff was able to take second in the all-around with a score of 39.375.

Dethloff also took second on the uneven bars with 9.875 and tied for third on the floor with a score of 9.9.

“Erin was phenomenal,” Kindler said. “She earned one of the highest scores at Florida that we’ve ever had.”

Senior Karen Kuplicki tied for third on the vault with a 9.85.

“Karen did very well on vault. It was a new vault for her and she did a great job,” Kindler said. “She will probably do it for us for the rest of the year.”

Sophomore Susan Stock tied for second on the balance beam and set a career high on the event with a score of 9.925.

“Susan’s beam performance was awesome,” Kindler said.

“A 9.925 is the second-highest in school history. The routine was flawless and we are excited for her.”

Freshman Laura-Kay Powell also set a career high with a score of 9.90 on the beam.

The Cyclones did have troubles on the floor routine which is normally one of their strongest events. The first performer went out of bounds but the last four performers were able to pick it up for the team.

“The last four performers did exceptional,” Kindler said.

“I was proud of the team because they were still able to put together a good score.”

The Gators swept first place in all four of the events including as well as winning the all-around competition.

Florida’s Orley Szmuch led all competitors with a 39.575 in the all-around competition and helped her team set a new school record for overall team score. The team score was also the fourth-best score in the nation for this season.

The Cyclones’ next meet is Saturday at Minnesota where they will compete against the Golden Gophers.
