Hat trick part of women’s hockey win

Even though the ISU women’s hockey team is short a few players and is changing its roster, that hasn’t seemed to affect its momentum.

With a weekend sweep of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, the Cyclones have won four straight games.

Katie Dunn scored her first career hat trick and four different players had at least one point as the Cyclones defeated the Eagles 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena. In the home finale on Sunday, five different Cyclones scored and goaltender Justine Skibbe got her eighth shutout of the season, as the Cyclones blanked the Eagles, 5-0.

Iowa State is now 13-9-1 overall.

After a slow start in the first period Saturday, Iowa State got on the board when freshman forward Kara Thompson fired a wrister with 2:08 remaining off assists from Dunn and Mallory Przybylski. Przybylski put the Cyclones up 2-0 in the same period as she put the puck past the Eagles goaltender.

Dunn said the lack of players on the roster put a little spark under the team.

“We were very short of people and I think it actually gave us a little bit of fire under us. Everything clicked and people were scoring,” Dunn said. “We had a lot of good passing going on down low. We pretty much capitalized on most of the chances, we got enough for the win.”

Dunn scored her first goal of the game with 6:47 remaining in the second period off a deflection from a Wisconsin-LaCrosse player’s foot that bounced right into the goal. Toni Guidarelli and Anne Friedrichsen assisted on the play. The Eagles got their lone goal in the second period.

In the third period, Guidarelli fired a shot past the Eagles’ goaltender with 4:52 remaining to make it 4-1. Then Dunn provided the Cyclone crowd some excitement. Her second goal came with 1:13 remaining off a deflection from a Guidarelli assist. Finally, Dunn captured the hat trick with one second remaining.

Dunn enjoyed capturing her first career hat trick.

“It felt pretty good,” Dunn said, who now has 15 goals on the season.

“I’m not going to complain about the first one since it went off someone’s skate. The last one was fun because there was a second to play.”

The Cyclones outshot the Eagles 38-9 in the game.

“We had a strong game. We started off a little slow. We got it going on when we put some goals in the net. We made some good passes,” ISU assistant coach Kevin Rout said.

“That’s one thing we worked a lot in practice is good passing. It really was cooking there. We got a small team and we play with a lot of heart. It was nice to see that.”

Iowa State will end the season Feb. 22-23 at Wisconsin-Madison.
