Women’s soccer club seeks more players to join team

The ISU women’s soccer club, in its first season in four years, is looking for women to come and join the team.

As is stated on the team Web site, “The ISU women’s soccer club is a group of laid back, co-active, vibrant gals who love soccer.”

Level of experience is not a factor; anyone is welcome, said Katie Messer, vice president of the club.

“This team is for anyone who likes to play soccer,” Messer said. “We want to get the word out for girls to come and join.”

She said many women who come to Iowa State are surprised to find out that a university of this size doesn’t have a women’s soccer club.

Most colleges and universities in the area and in the country have one, so many women have been working hard to get this club started again, Messer said.

The team was formed at the end of last semester, and by word of mouth, more women came and joined the team which already has 20 members.

Messer said they would like to have enough members to form a couple of teams for the upcoming season.

“This is a fun way to still enjoy soccer after high school,” Carter said. “Most girls don’t get the opportunity to play in college because they aren’t given scholarships. This is a way for us to still play competitive soccer.”

The team is scheduled to play in indoor tournaments at the University of Iowa and Loras College. They are coached by Sandro Bassanini, who also coaches the ISU men’s soccer club team.

The women practice twice a week on the turf at the Lied Recreation Center. Practice is held from 9 to 10:30 p.m. Mondays and at 10:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday. They will begin to have weekend practices as well.

Informal workouts are held at 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays on the third floor for women who want to stay in shape and need someone to go along for motivation. When the weather gets nicer, practice will be held outdoors.

Members of the team will also hold camps for the Ames Soccer Club on weekends at the Rec Center. Many of the women will have the opportunity to volunteer to coach some of the Ames Club teams.

“The camps are a way for the club to raise money,” Messer said. “It will also give some of the girls experience in coaching.”
