Grants will aid research

An ISU professor recently received two grants from the National Science Foundation for computer software engineering.

Robyn Lutz, associate professor of computer science, received a grant totaling $279,154 to continue research in the safety analysis of software systems. Another grant, for $201,974, will enable Lutz to develop a more accessible language in computer software.

Lutz said the grants will aid her advancements in computer software and help student research in computer science also.

“I was very excited,” Lutz said. “This allows us to accomplish our research goals more readily.”

Lutz, who teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses, said she has no problem balancing teaching and research.

“I find that what I learn in research can be applied to my teaching, and vice versa,” she said.

Carl Chang, chairman of the computer science department, said he was proud of his colleague for her accomplishment.

“[Lutz] has been working in the field for many years and has made many significant contributions,” he said.

Chang said the grants will help the department and the field of software engineering.

Frank Anger, deputy director for the National Science Foundation, is confident Lutz will use the grant effectively.

Lutz’s work in safety analysis will contribute to making society safer, he said.

Among other honors, Lutz has received grants from NASA for software engineering research.

Lutz is also an editor of Requirements Engineering Journal and has written many published articles.

She is a member of the Program Committee for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.
