Despite their strong defense and a strong pitching performance by freshman Shannon Mortimer, the Cyclones fell short to Appalachian State on Saturday with a 2-1 loss.

The Cyclones went into Saturday night’s matchup with two wins under their belt from Friday night’s performances against Marshall and Radford.

Iowa State freshman Shannon Mortimer had a powerful performance throughout the game with five strikeouts paired with an impressive display of defense shown throughout the game by the rest of the team.

Starting the game off with a double play, the Cyclone defense came out to fight as their efforts hindered the Mountaineers ability to score until the top of the seventh inning. With a two-run home run by freshman Alison Durrence, the Mountaineers held a 2-0 lead.

Senior Sally Woolpert responded with a homerun into left field which progressed the score to 2-1 in the bottom half of the inning.

Appalachian State came out on top with a 2-1 victory over the Cyclones, resulting in the Iowa State’s overall record to be 5-6.

Iowa State will conclude the Holy City Showdown against Dartmouth at 8 a.m. Sunday.
