Faculty Senate to address Regents

The Faculty Senate will directly address the Board of Regents at its meeting Wednesday. The Regents will also elect a new president before the close of business.

The April meeting of the Board of Regents will be on the campus of the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs. In accordance with the Regents’ new efforts to reduce the number of “people days” required by board members, the meeting will last only one day, said Executive Director Greg Nichols.

Board members will be able to nominate other members for the position of president. Voting for the position will be on the spot.

Of special interest to Iowa State is the Faculty Senate’s opportunity to address the Regents regarding the naming of the new Martin C. Jischke Honors Building.

“I don’t imagine a lengthy debate,” Nichols said. “But I do think it is important. It is important to give the Faculty Senate their due to present their viewpoint.”

The decision to name the building after former ISU president Jischke was made nearly two years ago, said Regent David Fisher of West Des Moines.

“The Jischke Building is old news and water over the dam,” Fisher said. “I can’t see us going back to change that.”

In addition, parking fees and residence hall rates for the three state universities will be set.

At its March meeting, the Regents were presented with detailed reports on the proposed residence system rate increases, parking rate increases and miscellaneous fee and charge increases.

Fisher does not foresee major debate about any of those issues.

“Last month, a clear case of the need to raise the rates was presented,” Fisher said. “I don’t anticipate anything of great debate.”

Nichols agreed, calling this month’s agenda “straightforward.”

Wednesday’s meeting will also be the first time the newly-elected Government of the Student Body President T.J. Schneider will represent the student body. GSB Vice President Joe Darr will be unable to attend because of responsibilities with the GSB senate.
