Big 12 opener vs. Baylor postponed due to attack

The ISU volleyball team met as usual for Tuesday’s practice, but as players and coaches prepared to take the floor their thoughts and focus weren’t entirely on volleyball.

“It’s hard to think about volleyball right now, because of what’s going on across the country,” sophomore Renae Pruess said. “But at the same time, I think once we start practicing, it will all be fine.”

The Cyclones’ match vs. Baylor scheduled for tonight has been postponed as a result of attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

It’s unclear when the match will be made up, although the weekend of Oct. 5-7 has been mentioned as a possibility.

The Iowa State-Iowa football game is also in danger of being postponed.

A decision regarding the matter is expected to come later Wednesday afternoon.

ISU athletics director Bruce Van De Velde said Tuesday afternoon that a decision had not been made yet regarding any of ISU’s weekend matchups including football, cross country, golf and soccer.

“Volleyball is the only thing suspended as of now,” he said.

After starting the season 3-2 and surpassing its win total of a year ago, the team was to meet Baylor in their first Big 12 conference matchup of the season.

Pruess said although the Cyclones were ready for the match, she can understand why it was postponed.

“I’m sure they [Baylor] were scheduled to leave already,” Pruess said. “… We want to play the match. We’re ready to play the match, but we also understand and want everybody to be safe.”

Freshman Brittany Dalager is new to the team but has already been on one flight.

Dalager said that when it comes time to get back on a plane, this tragedy will probably enter her thoughts.

“It definitely can scare you,” she said. “I’ll probably think a little about it.”

Pruess agreed.

“I didn’t have class today, so it’s all I’ve done all day. I couldn’t stop watching the coverage,” she said. “… It really makes you think. We fly a lot. It makes you think about that.”

The next match for the Cyclones is scheduled for Saturday when they’ll travel to Missouri.

It’s unclear whether the match will be played or not.
