DPS seeks new director

A nationwide search for a new public safety director is underway after the former director was named Ames chief of police.

Former director Loras Jaeger left the department after 11 years to move across town to the Ames Police Department.

Jerry Stewart, who is serving as interim director, said he will probably apply for the position.

“I would definitely consider the job,” said Stewart, who will maintain his duties as assistant DPS director.

The search is slated to finish by the end of the fall semester. However, Doug Houghton, DPS program manager, said the search may take longer than expected.

“It may even go into spring, realistically,” he said.

School officials will advertise the job opening, bring applicants to campus and begin the selection process this fall.

Jaeger left the department earlier this month and began work at the Ames Police Department Aug. 21. He said he feels ready for the new challenge.

“I had been at Iowa State for a long time,” Jaeger said. “When the opportunity arose at the Ames Police Department, I found it to be a new and exciting move.”

Before he starts fulfilling his role as the chief of police, Jaeger said he would like to get to know the staff.

“After getting to know all the employees, I will start setting goals and moving on,” Jaeger said.
