Dean of students candidates announced

Three candidates have been announced for the dean of students position.

The first of the three candidates will be visiting Iowa State Friday for an interview, a luncheon and an open forum.

The candidates are Peter Englin, interim dean of students at Iowa State; Kathryn Cavins, assistant vice president for student services and student life at Western Illinois University in McComb; and Todd Holcomb, director of residence life and new student programs at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Englin said the itinerary for each of the candidates includes a meeting with the student affairs cabinet office; a campus tour; a lunch with students, faculty and staff; an open forum; and a meeting with the dean of students office staff.

Holcomb will be the first candidate to visit Iowa State. He will be on campus Friday. Cavins’ visit is scheduled for Tuesday and Englin will speak Aug. 2.

Englin said the chance to be the dean of students was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

“Well a year ago I wouldn’t have believed this was possible, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this position as interim dean and I look forward to serving the community,” he said.

Englin said if he were to get the job he would work on reaching out to ISU students.

“One thing I’ve come to recognize is that the students don’t know what the Dean of Students Office can provide,” he said. “So my priority would be to market our services to students and the faculty and staff who regularly work with students so no one misses out on what we can provide.”

Englin said the responsibility of the dean of students is to provide leadership for the 13 units that provide direct services to students.

“It requires partnership and collaboration with faculty and staff so that students can be successful,” he said.

Englin said he is looking forward to possibly being the dean of students at Iowa State.

Teresa Branch, assistant vice president for student affairs, said the new dean of students is going to be chosen by Thomas Hill, the vice president for Student Affairs. His decision will be based on input given to him from all those who participate in the interview process, including a 10-person search committee.

The forums are open to the public and will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in 210 Beardshear on the respective days.
