Someone should avoid this movie

Varnit Khanna

There are some movies that can make you more dumb after watching them. There are a lot of things that can stupefy you from a movie such as plot, acting, directing and character depth.

But “Someone Like You” will make you feel this way by using a different strategy. The entire basis of the movie is centered around a theory – somewhat funny and somewhat serious – but it’s nothing new. It’s something that every woman thinks about when they go through a breakup.

Ashley Judd (“Double Jeopardy”) is Jane Goodale, a successful talent coordinator for a talk show who goes through a rocky love relationship with Ray, the show’s executive producer, played by Greg Kinnear (“As Good as it Gets”). She “comes up” with what she calls “the new cow theory” – an answer for why men can’t commit.

She believes men are like bulls, and a bull will only be with a new female cow for a little while before moving on to another cow, never going back to the old one. Duh, this has been obvious forever. Well, at least women have been saying that forever.

She becomes this all-powerful man-hater and pushes her theory onto everyone else through a magazine column.

But through the help of her male roommate and co-worker, she realizes this is all based on her own insecurities and that men are actually good creatures, blah blah blah.

The whole story is pretty much pointless anyway as this flick is just a vehicle to show off Judd’s cuteness.

The film would make more sense if it were meant for young girls who are just getting into relationships, but all of the relationships in the movie are based on sex, making this movie for the adults – that’s why you feel so stupid when you leave because it insults your intelligence.

Judd’s acting really isn’t that bad; she just shouldn’t be doing flaky films like this. Oscar could be visiting her future if she starts picking the right roles.

The only bad thing about her character is the little things she does with her face to try and look cute – biting the lower lip is a bit clich‚, and it all seemed way too rehearsed.

Kinnear’s portrayal of a confused yet confident ladies’ man was pretty believable though his acting style hasn’t changed much since his best supporting actor nomination in 1998. During a breakup scene, he had the same emotions coming out as when his dog wouldn’t come to him in “As Good as it Gets.”

Backing up Judd in the actress category was Marisa Tomei. What happened to her being a good actress? She won best supporting actress for “My Cousin Vinnie” in 1992 and hasn’t turned any heads with her 17 films since then.

The standout actor in “Someone Like You” is definitely Hugh Jackman, Judd’s roommate and co-worker who is nothing but a charming player with a bit of a soft side. Though his character is somewhat stereotypical, he adds much of the comedy to the movie, since it is supposed to be a romantic comedy.

This relative mainstream newcomer to the movie industry has the charm of Rupert Everett (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”) and the smart-ass qualities of Sean William Scott (Stifler in “American Pie”).

This is definitely one of those movies your girlfriend will beg you to take her to, but you might as well give in since it does have some entertaining parts. And you’ll feel cool when you predict the ending in the first five minutes – that’s how easy it is.

Just don’t go by yourself like a certain critic had to.

Don’t let the fact that this is the number two movie in the country fool you. Movie companies release mostly fluff right after the Oscars.
