Hauser, Kann to lead Daily

The Iowa State Daily Publication Board decided Wednesday who will lead the Daily during summer and the 2001-2002 academic year.

Andrea Hauser, junior in journalism and mass communication, was chosen as next year’s editor in chief, and Michelle Kann, junior in journalism and mass communication, was chosen as the summer editor.

Hauser said she plans to restructure the newsroom next year.

“It’s a pretty big change,” she said, “but I think with the talent next year, we’ll be able to do it, and it will work and make us more like a professional newspaper, not only in our news coverage, but also in our setup.”

Hauser also said she plans to create a senior reporter position for those students who are not interested in editing, but want more experience reporting.

“[The position is designed for] people who are really excited about reporting and getting interesting, in-depth stories,” she said.

Kann said her plans for the summer paper focus more on the online version of the Daily.

“[I will work to] incorporate the online with the newspaper to improve our Web site and have our staff work to make a daily paper and a Web site great together,” she said.

Short daily stories will be posted on the Web site this summer, Kann said, and the print issue will be used for more in-depth coverage.

“Students who aren’t in Ames over the summer look at the Web site for their local coverage,” she said.

Kann said she is already starting to plan for the summer.

“It’s a little overwhelming right now,” she said. “It’ll all work out in the end.”

Hauser said her previous experiences working for the Daily encouraged her to apply for the position.

“I’m very excited,” she said. “We have a lot of work in front of us, but I think that we’ll have a lot of fun, too. This is a great group of people in the newsroom, and I have confidence that we’ll be able to continue providing the Iowa State community with the best source of information about their university.”
