Cyclones in All-Star meet

If ISU wrestler Cael Sanderson was considered the headliner at Monday’s NWCA All-Star Meet, hopefully the 2,800 people in attendance didn’t blink during his match.Sanderson pinned Shawn Scannel of Rider University in just 39 seconds during the 184-pound match at the meet held in Lancaster, Penn. at Franklin and Marshall College. Sanderson is now 28-0 on the season and 107-0 in his Cyclone career. The match started with a scramble situation in which Sanderson came out on top by putting Scannel in a cradle for the pin. Scannel was a substitution for Oklahoma State’s third-ranked Dan Cormier who chose to skip the event after learning of the fatal accident involving the Cowboy basketball team Saturday.Sanderson was not the only Cyclone competing as Cole Sanderson and Joe Heskett were in action at 157 and 165 respectively.Seventh-ranked Sanderson came out on the losing end of a 9-3 decision to fifth-ranked Yoshi Nakamura of Penn University. Nakamura held just a 2-0 lead after two periods, but scored two takedowns and added back points in the third period. In a battle of the two top-ranked wrestlers at 165, Heskett lost a 3-2 double overtime decision to nemesis Don Pritzlaff of Wisconsin. Pritzlaff defeated Heskett in the finals of the national tournament last season. The first two periods went by scoreless and Pritzlaff broke the tie with a takedown with 20 seconds left. Heskett evened the match with an escape in the final seconds. After a scoreless overtime period, Pritzlaff chose the bottom position in double overtime and got out in just six seconds to win the match. Heskett falls to 26-2 on the season and 94-5 in his career. Pritzlaff’s win avenged a 6-3 loss to Heskett earlier this season. Last season, Pritzlaff won two of three meetings with Heskett, while Heskett earned a pair of victories over Pritzlaff two years ago.
